'In those types of circumstances, some children can benefit from a white noise machine,' says Dr. Akanli. For example, a child who is easily disturbed by external noises may find it easier to fall back asleep with the help of a sound machine.

However, there are also potential drawbacks to consider. Some parents have reported that their babies become too reliant on the machine and have difficulty sleeping without it. Additionally, some children may not be affected by white noise at all, or they may even find it overwhelming.

So when might your child need a sound machine? According to Dr. Akanli, any normal infant can benefit from one, especially during the first six months of life. In her experience, children who are 'light sleepers' may particularly benefit from the calming effects of white noise.
